Tips for Healthy Eating
- Be a good role model - don't try to make your kids eat healthy if you are not. Do it as a family.
- Take your kids to the grocery store and teach them how to read food labels and understand how a supermarket is set up.
- Be flexible with their food don't try to take away all the bad stuff all at once.
- Make dinner special - this is another family time activity. Let your kids help you with preparing dinner and allow them to make their own plate by showing them what it should look like. Protein/vegetables and whole grains.
- Don't be a short order cook - if your kids do not like what you are cooking try not to cater to each of their needs. They will learn to enjoy what the whole family is eating.
- Don't buy into marketing for kids - speaks for itself!
- Don't use foods as rewards, bribes or punishments - we know that M&M's worked for potty training and we all broke down and gave them whatever they wanted. Don't give in! Stickers or coloring books work just as well. We also have a habit of giving kids for not eating everything on their plate or their vegetables. Explain to them why they are good and try not to create a bad feeling between you, your child and the foods.
- Let kids help in the kitchen - kids should learn how to prepare foods. They can help with the washing of the vegetables etc. Show them how to prepare a meal from scratch…not something that is frozen or store bought.
- Make sure your child eats breakfast…the most important meal of the day! AMUST! Cereal, yogurt, anything healthy to start their day right.
- Encourage your kids to exercise - let them see mom and dad exercise. Encourage them to play outside or have a family walk or activity. Studies have shown that exercise boosts your immune system and increases your ability to concentrate.
- Remember you are the boss - our kids love the sugary choices. Take time to explain to them that there are alternative choices and try to limit the consumption of these foods. Instead have an apple with one cookie or an apple with peanut butter.
